Not sure how many of you remember all those verses from Proverbs we had going a while back(I think it was for April Fool's day). And how we were puzzling about Proverbs 26:4-5 which says
"Answer not a fool according to his folly,
lest you be like him yourself.
Answer a fool according to his folly,
lest he be wise in his own eyes."

Remember how we couldn't get past the fact that these verses seem contradictory? Well, in a book I've been reading, it had an explanation for it! So I just thought I'd share w/ you what I learned. Razz

The first part "answer not a fool according to his folly" is telling us not to get caught up in the fool's way of arguing. You can't adapt to his methods and arguments, otherwise you'll be a fool too "lest you be like him yourself". The second part "answer a fool according to his folly" tells us we should not let his foolishness go unoticed, but confront him on it so he can see the folly of it "lest he be wise in his own eyes".
